Conveyancing conference success in Grantham

Earlier this week, in collaboration with IQ Legal Training, we proudly sponsored a Residential and Commercial Property Conveyancing Conference. Held at the Belton Woods Hotel in Grantham, the event brought together local conveyancing professionals, as well as fellow sponsors Stewart Title, and HM Land Registry for an engaging day of discussions and presentations. The conference was split into two sections, with a focus on residential conveyancing in the morning and commercial conveyancing in the afternoon.

The morning session began with a presentation from Ian Quayle, an industry expert with over 12 years of experience in property law. After qualifying as a solicitor, Ian worked in a private practice specialising in property law before founding IQ Legal Training – a property law training business. His previous practical experience and in-depth knowledge provide invaluable insights for conveyancers.

During the session, Ian shared an update on the revisions to the TA6 form. While the updated form will not become mandatory until January 2025, it is already available for use, and Ian offered detailed guidance on how to effectively navigate the new two-part format. He also shared the latest Law Society guidance on the Building Safety Act, an area of growing importance in property law, along with case studies that illustrated practical due diligence strategies for conveyancers.

Before breaking for lunch Andrew Butler KC, delivered a presentation on parking issues and the key issues they present for residential conveyancing. Although a niche area, parking-related challenges can pose significant complexities for residential transactions. Andrew, a leading practitioner in property and commercial law and Head of Chambers for the Business and Commercial Group, shared expert advice and practical tips for residential conveyancers on how to address these concerns. His extensive experience in development disputes and professional negligence provided a solid foundation for his session.

Geodesys Account Manager Jess Achilleos also took to the stage in the morning to discuss the benefits of the CON29DW, our flagship product, as well as our Conveyancing Concierge Service. Designed to streamline the conveyancing process, this service helps conveyancers easily navigate the required reports for residential transactions. Reflecting on the event, Jess commented:

‘We had the privilege of attending and exhibiting at the Residential and Commercial Property Conference in Grantham alongside IQ Legal Training. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet lots of new faces and professionals in the industry and learn about their companies and search needs. Overall, it was a really insightful and informative day expertly led by Ian Quayle and his team.’

Following a well-deserved lunch break, the afternoon session shifted its focus to commercial conveyancing. Andrew Butler KC began with a session on the Building Safety Act and its implications for commercial property transactions. Ian Quayle then presented two sessions on leases: the first examining key clauses conveyancers should be aware of in commercial leases, and the second focusing on business lease renewals and the critical issues they present in property law.

Kay Toon, our Key Account Manager, also gave a presentation on our intuitive mapping system, designed to simplify the mapping process. She addressed the specific reports required for various commercial transactions, highlighting the distinctions between transaction types and the tailored reports necessary for each.

The day also included insightful contributions from fellow sponsors, Stewart Title and HM Land Registry.

Despite the snow and road closures, the conference was a resounding success. It provided valuable professional development opportunities, fostering networking and knowledge-sharing among industry experts and conveyancers. We look forward to future events that continue to support the advancement of property law and conveyancing practice.
